The beloved story of Tevye the milkman will return to the London stage this summer followed by a UK and Ireland tour.
The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre 2023 production of Fiddler on the Roof will transfer to London’s Barbican for a summer run followed by the first UK-wide run of the famous Jewish musical in over 12 years.
The Jerry Bock classic from 1964 portrays the clash between tradition and change in the village of Anatevka in 1905.
Set amid the Russian pogroms that paved the way for the “Great Immigration” between 1880 and 1920, Tevye struggles against a rapdily shifting world as his daughters fall in love and move away.
The musical features cherished songs including If I Were a Rich Man, Tradition, Matchmaker and Sunrise, Sunset.
Directed by Jordan Fein, with choreography by Julia Cheng, design by Tom Scutt and music from Jewish band Shir, the production’s Regent’s Park stint was well received last year, with a sell-out run and four stars from the JC.
However, the magic was married by a skirmish outside the theatre between pro-Palestine protesters and Jewish audience members before one performance. The theatre ensured stringent security and did not see further disruption.
The freh run show will open at the Barbican for an eight-week season from May 24 to July 19, with tickets available from 23 January.
The tour will then travel to Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sunderland, Bromley, Nottingham, Norwich, Bristol, High Wycombe, Southend, Eastbourne, Canterbury, Belfast, Dublin and Cardiff.
Casting is yet to be announced.
Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre chief executives, Drew McOnie and James Pidgeon, said: “We could not be more thrilled that our production of Fiddler on the Roof is getting a further life.
“We’re really looking forward to working with our producing partners to take this wonderful production to even more audiences across the country.”
