CHESMAN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
SOUTH MANCHESTER 6 MANCHESTER ATHLETIC 2
Missing five first-team regular, South started the game well and matched the opposition for the first 25 minutes.
The game changed when Adam Lavin slipped Jack Wooley through one-on-one; Wooley majestically lifted the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper from 30 yards, only for the keeper to save it with his hands. The referee was left with no choice - a red card to the keeper.
A cagey 20 minutes was to follow, with South nervous to press on whilst maintaining their defensive discipline.
The second half however was a different kettle of fish. Jack Lee opened the scoring with another long-range effort, before Toby Levy made it two with a beautifully curled 20 yarder with his weaker foot.
South’s third came through youngster Josh Darcy, who helped inspire South’s comeback against Redbridge last week.
The leaders pulled one back, but that only inspired South to push on. Wooley converted well from a Levy pass in behind, and talisman Adam Lavin joined the scoresheet to make it five.
Manchester Athletic scored their second with five minutes to go, but Levy completed the scoring after great work by 2nd team captain, Mikey Cohen, down the right.
Jubilant South Manchester boss Neil Collins said: "What a fantastic morning! The 13 boys played for the badge on their shirt, and put a real message out to the league and also to those who were unavailable to play due to one thing or another.
"We need to carry this momentum forwards now and finish the season strongly. We are still competing in three competitions so you never know - it may end well for us.
"I must also mention the club's U12s who won their league this weekend too - manager Phil Goldstone can be very proud - we certainly are."
