No Spanish inquisition after futsal defeat, says Barnett

Gideon Barnett is confident Team Maccabi GB can qualify from their group after a hefty defeat in their opening match against Spain.

Spain stormed into an early 3-0 lead before GB captain Daniel Reuben reduced the deficit with a simple tap-in following excellent work from Mark Wagman.

There was a moment of controversy as Pete Lazard had a goal chalked off after he bundled the ball over the line, with the referee adjudging that he had kicked the ball out of the hands of the Spanish goalkeeper.

Two more Spanish goals put the result beyond doubt before GB mustered a second when a shot from Jon Rayner was handled, allowing Reuben to smash home a shot from the penalty spot.

But GB’s misery was compounded when Spain completed a 6-2 victory with a spot-kick of their own.

GB coach Gideon Barnett said: “Spain capitalised on three errors, after that we were chasing the game.

"We penned them into their half after the interval but didn’t take our chances. Overall I thought the boys did very well.

"Spain are the best team in the group and I’m confident we will beat Denmark and South Africa in our remaining games."
