Gilad Nachshen, 15, also placed second in his 800m race, crossing the line in 1:58.30, just short of his personal best. But his proudest achievement of the day was leading the U17 4x400m team to victory in a time of 3:27.81, breaking a club record set 34 years ago to the day.
Meanwhile, 16-year-old pole vaulter Jonny Cohen, returning to competition for the first time since May after recovering from injury, cleared 3.35m to win bronze.
Under-20 Tomer Tarragano closed his outdoor track season with two middle-distance PBs, completing the 1,500m in under four minutes for the first time with 3:59.05 and then cutting his 800m PB to 1:58.14 at the Watford open.
In an unprecedented year for records and world-class performances by Israeli athletes, Maru Teferi has broken his own national half marathon record when finishing second in Tallinn, Estonia, in 1:00.52, the fifth fastest time in Europe this year.
On October 5, Teferi will be competing in the IAAF world
championships’ first-ever midnight marathon, scheduled to start at 11.59pm so that the athletes will not have to cope with the daytime Qatari heat, though temperatures are still likely to be in the high 20s.
