Futsal stars pay the price

Team GB experienced mixed emotions on the opening day of the European Maccabi Games.

The Open futsal team went down 4-3 in a thriller against the much-fancied Australians.

Jamie Wolfson had hauled GB level before the Aussies marched into a 4-1 lead. Lee Bibring and Jonathan Green helped GB get back into the game and they could even have salvaged a point had it not been for a last-minute penalty miss by Sam Arghebant. "We conceded some soft goals which was disappointing but we showed superb character to get back into the game," said manager Jonny Cohen.

"Australia are supposed to be the favourites and the fact that I'm disappointed not to have beaten them shows what we are capable of.

"I'm confident we can reach the latter stages. Australia are a very good team but we really rattled their cage."

Connor Perlmutter was among the scorers as the Under 16 football team made a flying start with a 2-0 success over Germany.

Nathan Sollosi put the junior football team ahead against Spain but that was as good as it got as strikes from Manuel Smolkin (2) and Marcos Ross wrapped up a deserved
victory.

The junior tennis team made a promising start with victories in four of their first seven matches.
