Sam Cohen’s fine run in the Open Women’s Tennis singles has culminated in a silver medal for Team GB.
After three comprehensive victories, Cohen entered the final with confidence, but her Estonian rival proved too much winning 6-2, 6-1.
Nonetheless, the former director of the JCC Games in Orange County in 2013 has thoroughly enjoyed the experience of competing at the highest level of Jewish sport. She told JC Sport: “For me the Maccabi Games are much more than just about the tennis. I am delighted and honoured to take part and couldn’t say no when I found out the Games were to be held in Berlin.
"This is a truly unique experience and I will be telling my grandchildren not about the tennis, but rather about the special feeling of singing the Hatikva during the opening ceremony in the same stadium which played host to the Nazis.
"I knew on that night we turned the yellow star blue, and I will never forget that.”
Looking ahead, Sam will once again be representing Team GB at the Pan American Games in December, which will be her 24th Maccabi event since she debuted at the 1999 Games in Stirling, Scotland. Fittingly, she also won silver then.
