It's time to belt up

Waistlines are back - here's Jan Shure's pick of the best buys

articlemain

I am not going to say “forget trends”, as a headline just east of here suggested two weeks ago, but I am going to repeat my belief that in fashion we are in a post-trend world where the key to looking fabulous is to refresh clothes we already own with on-point styling and accessorising; by adopting only trends we love and by ignoring many trends entirely.
One of Spring’s key trends — waistlines — should not be ignored as this subtle shift in focus from hips to waist allows us to look on-point with very little effort.
While dresses in many new season collections highlight the waist — notably the Nyana by Roksanda, Massey by Gabriela Hirst and Hero from Johanna Ortiz — a statement belt is the instant way to define and reclaim a waistline.

A tailored wide belt such as the logo-emblazoned leather belts by Gucci and Valentino will dramatically demonstrate waistline-awareness, as will a skinny belt with knots or twists such as Isabel Marant’s Lecce (£195) or Lonny (£150), or Pippa Holt’s fringed cotton jacquard (£130); and any super wide belt such as a corset-belt like Loewe’s Anagram at £795 or Alaia’s laser-cut baby at £890, or a simpler one in black (Cos, £59; Mint Velvet, £55).
And, of course, a belt thrown round a blazer, a dress or a sweater now will instantly update a winter outfit, too. One word of caution, however: cinching a waist tightly may be less flattering to hips so consider letting a belt simply sit on your waist rather than pulling it in too tightly.
And always check your back view in a mirror…
