As I observed last month, at a time when every look, every hemline, every colour and every aesthetic is equally on-trend – as it is in S/S 2024 – the way to elevate and update your wardrobe is with bags and other finishing touches  Also, obviously, hair, make-up and attitude.

So here are the season’s best bags in many aesthetics, many sizes, many hues – brights, pastels, patterns and neutrals – and at prices from teeny to terrifying.

With mixed feelings of regret and relief, I’m giving up Fashion Fix for JC2, and this will be my last piece because writing about fashion has become almost impossible. And not just at the JC. All publications are treating fashion differently.

A raft of factors have fundamentally changed it – and not just how we consume it. More crucially, it’s how social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have accelerated the turnover of trends so that a tsunami of looks and micro-trends sweep across the globe at such dizzying speeds that print media can’t keep up – and nor can high-end designer brands whose ads in glossy mags rarely show clothing these days, but instead tempt us with fine jewellery, fragrance or punishingly priced “it” bags.

The result of all these options – as I have previously observed – is that everything and anything goes. And while that’s excellent news for cash-strapped consumers and the planet, it’s less good for the industry (suffering gargantuan over-supply problems), and for those of us writing about fashion. So adieu.
