Check, mate

articlemain

Unlike womenswear trends, which change so fast it is hard to keep up, menswear trends tend to evolve gradually, which means similar looks are often reworked from season to season.

But that's no excuse, chaps, to ignore the trends entirely, so we have been talking on your behalf to Sarah Cook, a freelance fashion stylist and writer, who has seen the menswear collections and distilled their essence for the JC's male readers.

"Of the trends which emerged from the autumn winter catwalk shows for 2011, the strongest are a 'great outdoors /alpine' look that has a luxurious feel with fine knitwear and shearling," says Sarah.

"Alongside this are plaids and checks, which have been visible for the last two to three years and continue this season."

Checks are on the rails now in lumberjack jackets and endless shirting options, while tartans and checks also make a strong appearance in edgier suiting and outerwear.

The autumnal colours to invest in, says Sarah, are the traditional shades: "Earthy tones, with warm oranges and yellows, mustard and muted reds".

Suiting trends include a strong 70s feel with slim cuts, or reflect English Heritage, crafted in classic fabrics like Prince of Wales check, herringbone and houndstooth or cord and velvet.

Sarah's advice to complete this smart look is a structured trench coat or a heavy wool peacoat.
