For the first time in our 182-year history, we publish our headline in Hebrew in solidarity with Israel
Nothing is more Israeli than the greeting that awaited IDF reservists arriving back this week. Crowds met them singing, “The Greeks aren’t here. The Romans aren’t here. The Nazis aren’t here. We are here and Hamas won’t be for much longer.”
There are serious fears about an attack by Hezbollah and terrorists in Syria, risking war on three fronts. But our spirit cannot be dimmed.
Unimaginable in scale, the massacre on Saturday was equivalent to 8,700 Britons being murdered in a day, or 43,000 Americans, dwarfing 9/11. This is a turning point in history. Jews everywhere and the civilised world must stand with Israel.
In Britain, even as we are gripped with anxiety, we are grateful to King Charles, the Prime Minister, the Home Secretary and the Labour Party for their words of support and reassurance about our safety.
Antisemites everywhere are inspired when Israelis die. Those in Britain who applaud Hamas, standing with the murderers against the victims, have set themselves against the democratic values that bind the UK and Israel.
This is a clarifying moment. We see you.
We stand with our Israeli brothers and sisters. We feel your pain and are with you in thought and in deed. Our prayers are at your back.
But to the jihadi butchers and their useful idiots in Britain, we say: The people of Israel are united. You will never win.
