One Voice, One Aim - You Could Have Heard Their Pin Drop

October 02, 2008 16:14

Friday and ...

Here's a story about Paul McCartney which didn't appear in any news report I read about his visit to Israel.

According to the peace movement, One Voice, he and his band paid them the greatest possible compliment by wearing their 'pin' during his gig in Yarkon Park.

What's more, amid the frantic pre-show preparations, he met O.V. staff and youth leaders and recalled: "My father told me that regular people don't like wars and don't want conflict. I'm not a politician – I just want to bring a message of peace. In every place I perform I see that people want the same thing".

His words echoed One Voice's own view that the majority of Israelis and Palestinians are moderates who simply wish to live their lives in peace and prosperity, free from violence, conflict, and occupation.

So there we have it: The only Beatle ever to make it to Israel is still willing to give peace a chance. What a mitzvah and what an entree for the Livni generation. Let's pray they don't waste the day.

Then Sunday ...

All the Beeb's a stage and hogging the limelight is the outrageously self-confident actress, Miriam Margolyes. So determined is she to stay centre-stage when interviewed by Kirsty Young on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs that not only does she tell the world that she caused her late mother to have a stroke but also screams that she's a proud Jew who's deeply ashamed of Israel. Eh?

She also mentions that she can't read Hebrew. What? Multi-talented, thousand-tongued Miriam has never bothered to learn even basic prayers b'Ivrit? That must explain why we'll never speak the same language! Maybe she should stop speaking in so many voices and start listening to one.

Today, Thursday (the day after Rosh Hashana) and ...

O.V. certainly does not waste time: Today, I received joint wishes for a shana tova and Eid mubarak (a joyful Eid) in Hebrew and Arabic from the team. If there were more like them and the guys from 'Windows for Peace', we might even see Ms Margolyes in Israel ... just once.
