Opening next week in London, in the middle of one of the worst economic recessions ever, is the first in a global chain of low cost kosher eateries called Foreskins. This concept was thought up by the UK restaurant entrepreneur, Aymina Houri and her Kosovan colleague, Mustafa Stifdrinc.
Apparently the idea is that the food itself cost nothing, zilch. Like the low cost airline business the novelty comes in charging for all the little extras. A table costs £5 and a chair costs £ 2. If a party of four wants 4 chairs then a progressive discount of 20% is applied per chair so 4 chairs would cost the diners £ 5.60. Plates start from £ 3 depending on size. A fork costs £5 and a knife is £ 6. Dessert spoons are priced in at £ 4.50, slightly less. Aymina thinks this will encourage customers to have just one plate and one set of cutlery for the entire meal experience thereby saving on washing up and therefore saving the environment. There will also be only one type of drinking glass, whether for soft drinks, beers or wine. Diners will be encouraged to share glasses to save crowding the table with unnecessary glasses. Waiters will also come round selling scratchcards.
When you come to pay the bill, either in cash or by plastic, a flat handling charge of £ 5 is applied. On leaving the restaurant the front door will be locked and customers routed via the kitchen where they will be 'encouraged ' to wash and dry the plates, knives and forks, and glasses, after which the time lock on the front door will be released.
Think this will benefit global warming ? Think it will catch on ? Time will tell. Watch this space.
