"Your country needs YOU to go shopping" the current Guardian weekend magazine cover tells readers. How fortuitous that I'm on a visit to the Old Country for a few days and happy to oblige, particularly now that the shekel/sterling rate is in my favour. I opened the magazine, eager to read the fashion team's suggestions. "Save pennies at the supermarket checkout - and you can spend your pounds on accessories that pay their way." And how are we to do that? Nothing to it! Simply omit the bread, flour, Cornflakes and baked beans next time you're in Waitrose and then you can afford a Louis Vuitton bag - a snip at £1,600 - and a pair of Russell and Bromley sandals that cost a mere £445. These are just a couple of examples of "accessories that pay their way", but you get the gist.
Thank goodness for a socially-aware newspaper that's in tune with its readership. I'm so grateful to the Guardian for helping me work out how best to spend my hard-earned shekels while I'm in London. Primark, anyone?
