That indefatigable campaigner Lord Mann has yet again shone a light on antisemitism. The latest report by his Parliamentary Task Force on Antisemitism highlights how Jewish university students are “concealing their identity” on campus due to fears of antisemitism and shows the extent to which the academics’ union, the UCU, is failing its Jewish members.
Its findings will come as no surprise to anyone who has experience of what is happening on campus — but it is no less important a report for that. It is an outrage that Jewish students (or any others) should feel intimidated because of who they are.
Equally, it is clear that the UCU is no longer fit for purpose, with many Jewish academics feeling that their union is not safe for them.
The report also found not one instance of free speech being restricted in any of the 56 universities included in the report which had implemented the IHRA definition of antisemitism. Groups such as the PSC and other anti-Israel activists have long argued that the definition is intended to silence pro-Palestinian voices, a canard which has been all too often accepted by those who do not consider the facts to matter.
Lord Mann’s report shows clearly that upholding a definition of antisemitism is not remotely the same thing as preventing criticism of Israel. He and his team have done a great service with their report.
