Our party in a box had a serious message

I've been reviewing Chanukah foodie gifts. They're all fabulous, but the one that has impressed me the most is JAMI's Chanukah Celebration in a box.

I cannot think of anything more menschy to semd to a friend - or friends.

The charity concerned with our mental health has come up with something that helps us pay it forward AND look after our loved ones.

Many may be feeling down as we face celebrating yet another festival apart; and some will also be worried about family and friends — whose mental health will have suffered after several months of social isolation.

So the lovely folk at the mental health charity have come up with the perfect plan.

They’ve created Chanukah Celebration Boxes which are three gifts in one. Firstly, they’ll help the lucky recipient celebrate Chanukah. Inside the orange ribbon-wrapped boxes are filled mini bagels; doughnuts; grape juice; chocolate covered strawberries and yoghurt raisins packed up with Chanukah candles, dreidels and chocolate coins — literally a party in a box.

But that’s not all. If you request, your box can be personally delivered by a JAMI worker; each shlepper a trained mental health first aider, who will engage the recipient in a doorstep chat. In that conversation they’ll be able to assess whether or not any further services are needed and will follow up.

And not only will you be checking up on your loved one, but JAMI will be able to take a donation from your purchase to help pay for JAMI to look after someone else.

The boxes are being packed up at Head Room Café — the mental health café in Golders Green — which has to close its doors to visitors at points during the pandemic, but which was still providing an online programme of events and groups supporting personal and communal wellbeing.

I shared a sneaky preview box with my children, who were delighted. Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels for me and cream cheese-filled bagels for them, plus mini, jam-filled doughnuts and pretzels; yoghurt raisins and chocolate-coated strawberries went down very well. We’ve saved our Chanukah candles for the big day(s) but, having completed our warm up, are on track for celebrating our festival of light in style.
