The dilemma over next month’s planned antisemitic rally in Golders Green is whether an organised response elevates a group of fringe extremists beyond their real importance and thus plays into their hands — or whether ignoring them provides them with a platform to spread their hate. In that context, the idea of Golders Green Together is sophisticated and welcome — an entirely positive celebration of diversity which just happens to be focused on a series of events concluding the day before the fascists arrive. Golders Green Together will have been worthwhile whether the antisemites’ numbers turn out to be either threatening or insignificant. Bringing together the area’s businesses, residents and organisations from its many communities is a good thing in itself. As one of those, the JC is proud to be involved. And within our community, it has been heartening to see the speed and ease with which differing — rival? — bodies have agreed on a joint initiative. A vast improvement on the state of things last summer.
