As a woman who is seven months pregnant everyone told me I was exempt from fasting this Yom Kippur. But fasting is what YK is all about. Being in a room of starving people is an incredible leveller. As my brother reminded us this year, it doesn't matter whether your shul compatriots drive a Porsche or a bicycle, 20 hours in to the fast and we all feel the same. Ruddy starving. And I didn't want to 'miss out' on, I guess, missing out.
After checking with the viritual rabbincal authorities on the world wide web it didn't take me long to find out that pregnant women are supposed to fast - even if that means staying in bed all day. And even if that means that your husband has to stay home and miss shul by looking after you. Well who knew?
So I did it. And I'm proud - although I admit I didn't stay in shul for as long as I normally do. But to anyone who is pregnant next year and is thinking about going without food for 25 hours - don't worry, I've done it and it's OK. I was starving hungry but then, isn't everyone?
