One of my son’s first words was cake. He demanded ‘cak’ at an alarmingly young age. Oh, how we kvelled over our early talker.
He’s still inordinately fond of a sweet treat — always focussed of his next sugary snack. It’s an unhealthy obsession which I’m constantly battling, but it doesn’t stop me treating him from time to time.
A couple of weeks ago, at his Leaver’s Assembly (Zoomed into our home) he was awarded a prize from his primary school for Academic Excellence. I would say it was well-deserved, (it was) but you’d accuse me of being a Jewish mother.
I am. And as a paid up balaboosta, wanted to reward my gorgeous boy with his favourite nosh.
The obvious choice was cak. Cupcakes from St Albans-based cake makers, Crave Cakes.
I met the ladies behind Crave Cakes — Alex Tawfik and Sonal Vee — during lockdown. They baked up a storm for the St Albans hub of You Deliver We Donate, that I’d founded up with my neighbour, Lisa Quait. Our group cooked 400+ meals a week to help fuel our amazing NHS staff and also collected supplies for homeless and needy locals.
Once a week, Alex would drive up and unload stunning creations that made tired hospital staff smile and feel the love.
I asked them to bake me six cupcakes and gave Alex a few of his favourite things.
The next day, Alex brought round six salted caramel cupcakes, topped with Tottenham Hotspur-themed décor.
Not only were the cakes utterly superb, but they looked fabulous and made my eleven year old boy feel super special. Job done.
