A question...

April 02, 2010 14:49

When it comes to meaningful questions, "How is this night different from all other nights?" certainly takes some beating. It provokes deep thought on the meanings - obvious and not so obvious - of Pesach, is an excellent opportunity to begin explaining our history and traditions to young children and has been asked every year for thousands of years, which surely shows it has something.

One other question has been occupying me this year, but unlike "How is this night..." nobody has been able to answer it. That question is:

Why don't we eat charoset all year round?

Think about it. It costs little to make and it's delicious - we had six gentiles at our Seder this year, none of whom had attended a Seder or tasted charoset before (or even heard of it, for that matter), and every one of them agreed. Two of them had a bowl each filled with it for dessert and asked for the recipe - and were surprised at how little is involved in making it. You can even make it healthy if you wish, by substituting red wine for grape juice and sugar for honey; though mine contained a quarter of a bottle of Merlot and several heaped spoonfuls of demerara.

Chag Pesach sameach, all! :-)
