In a video released this morning by the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer sits attentively to listen to what Rosh Hashanah and the coming High Holy Days means to husband and rabbi duo Rabbo Gabriel Botnick and Rabbi Rose Prevezer.

In the video, Rabbi Botnick speaks to the Labour leader about Rosh Hashanah being an opportunity to “wipe the slate clean” and a time to be around family.

Rabbi Prevezer tells Starmer of the importance of being surrounded by “huge amounts” of family and that the holiday period is a time for “deep introspection” and tradition.

Starmer responds, “That’s part of it, isn’t it? Having everyone around, going through the history, reminding everyone of the tradition, enjoying those traditions together.”

Talking to the Jewish community, Starmer added: “As Jewish communities across Britain and around the world prepare for the most significant period in the calendar, I wish to extend my warmest good wishes for a sweet, peaceful and above all, a healthy New Year.”

In a message to JC readers on Tuesday, Starmer said: “In these difficult times, the spirit of volunteerism and chesed remains the hallmark of the Jewish community.

“I’ve been lucky enough to see this throughout the year during many events with communities up and down the country.

“As we prepare for this celebration, I’ve been reflecting on my last year.

"I'm grateful to have strengthened my ties and deepened my relationships with Britain’s Jewish community.

“I'm proud that the Labour Party has continued to make strides in tackling antisemitism in all forms.

"I remain as committed to my promise now, as I was when I took over the leadership.”

The Labour leader, whose wife comes from a Jewish background, has a custom to mark the day each year, and to reflect on the year past.

He added: “And as we enter the solemn days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, may you all be inscribed in the Book of Life.

“Shanah Tova.”
