From next month, Mr Aziz will become the US’s first director of development, a fundraising position involving identifying potential partners for a range of projects.

“The United Synagogue is the largest organisation of its type in the whole of Europe,” he said.“The US is in the position to influence the future of British Jewry more than any other organisation.

“I feel I can play a significant role there which will have an even wider impact than things I’ve done before.”

Mr Aziz acknowledged that he had “stayed at JNF for less time than originally planned” but was leaving on amicable terms. “There haven’t been any kind of major disagreements.”

As he had only recently informed JNF of his decision, the search for his successor had yet to begin.
