Sponsored: Tel Aviv offers everything a European metropolis can, all with a Mediterranean twist
December 13, 2018 12:04It’s a perfect morning to sit outside with breakfast and a newspaper, making plans for the day while enjoying the peace and quiet. It’s easy to do in one of the most advanced cities in the world, where one can experience great food, amazing culture, astounding technology and a vibrant atmosphere.
There’s a farmers’ market to stock up on fresh produce that rivals the delectable ingredients seen nightly on Masterchef. Next on the agenda are the local craft shops, bookstores and malls. Stroll through a city park, with acres of green space – and perhaps stop for mini golf or a picnic. You might even be able to catch a Segway tour.
Pubs and eateries dot the road, offering innumerable options for food and drink.
Even the most traditional options taste unique here, like fish and chips.
No, wait. We meant falafel. Hold on, what?
Yes, falafel. We’re not in London now. This is Tel Aviv – and Tel Aviv offers everything a European metropolis can, all with a Mediterranean twist.
Many of Tel Aviv’s hottest restaurants are world-renowned and serve innovative menus with diverse influences. Tel Aviv is also the vegan capital of the world, with many kitchens catering to specific dietary needs. Discover food to obsess over in the Sarona market and excite your palete with the variety. Because, thanks to a year-round, sunny climate, high-quality produce is never too far from the plate and memorable colours, aromas and flavours are always in season.
Then there is the shopping: chain stores in the Azrieli mall and the high street, unique treasures in Nahalat Binyamin’s artist market and Sheinkin. Everything from craft gifts and antiques to indie fashion boutiques are just waiting to be discovered.
Culture is also close at hand, with the national theatre, Habima which puts on regular performances on its four stages, ranging from 1984 to Les Miserables to Shakespeare. There is also a strong comedy scene, with frequent Tel Aviv gigs by British comedians.
Tel Aviv’s city park is also the premier open-air concert venue in Israel and has hosted legends like Bon Jovi, Elton John and Paul McCartney. As city parks go, Park Hayarkon is impressive; it covers 864 acres and contains six beautiful gardens, sports facilities, an aviary, lakes and a water park.
Rabin Square is another landmark famous for public events. Many important gatherings, free concerts, demonstration and even art installations occur there. From silent raves to parades, Rabin Square is the place to be.
Tel Aviv’s museums range from the grand and extensive to the niche and unexpected. There’s a planetarium at the Eretz Israel Museum, as well as cultural and historic exhibits. The Museum of the Jewish People traces the nation’s history to the present day. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art houses an international collection of contemporary art and sculpture that is provocative and moving.
Getting around this coastal town is easy. There are Boris-style bikes, called Tel-O-Fun, a pun on ofanayim, the Hebrew word for bicycle. Cycling is a great way to get around and stay in shape in this bustling city that is now home.
