Bolivia's Jews have expressed alarm over the rise in antisemitic incidents in the country - the latest being a dynamite attack on the main Jewish cemetery in the city of Cochabamba on September 13.

The president of the community, Ricardo Udler, has called on the government of President Evo Morales to take action to prevent further incidents.

A synagogue in Cochabamba was attacked with stones and Molotov cocktails in April and again in July.

The American Jewish Committee believes that the Morales government is partially responsible. "President Morales's hostility towards Israel has encouraged regular attacks against the country's Jewish population in the media and violent attacks on Jewish institutions," said Dina Siegel Vann, the AJC's director of Latino and Latin American affairs. "This is a very dangerous trend that only the government can and should vigorously turn back and end."

Mr Morales broke off diplomatic relations with Israel in 2009, calling its treatment of Palestinians "genocide". In July of this year, Mr Morales declared Israel a "terrorist state" because of its offensive in the Gaza Strip and made it compulsory for Israeli citizens to obtain a visa to visit Bolivia.

On August 12, a Bolivian MP, Marcelo Elio Chávez, said: "Unfortunately, the Jewish people who were massacred during the Second World War have not learned their lesson and they are now joining forces with US imperialism."

Mr Udler said it was essential to act now to ensure that the situation did not get out of hand. "I don't want this to become another Venezuela" - a reference to the rise in antisemitism reported in that country under President Nicolás Maduro.

In July, there was a 1,200 per cent increase in reported antisemitic incidents in South America compared to the same month last year.

Mr Udler pledged that special security measures would be put in place over the New Year and Yom Kippur.
