Mitzvah Day came early for Ealing Synagogue members this year.

Rather than abandon participation in the annual day of good deeds because of the imminent start on the shul hall redevelopment, congregants decided to advance their contribution.

So before the builders moved in, 20 disabled ex-servicemen from the local St David's Home, together with their helpers, were entertained to tea and a singalong. Joining them and the shul volunteers were minister Rabbi Hershi Vogel and the Mayor and Mayoress of Ealing, Councillor Rajinder Mann and his wife Gurmit. Dame Vera Lynn sent a message of support.

Committee member Gail Sackloff said "this was definitely a mitzvah to be repeated. The staff from the home told us it was a marvellous opportunity for their residents, who are mostly wheelchair-bound, to get out for an afternoon."
