President of the United Synagogue Michael Goldstein has issued a powerful message of solidarity to all staff in the organisation, addressing the recent surge in riots across the country.
In his letter, Goldstein writes of his “disgust at the racism and violence we are seeing on our streets across the country”.
He acknowledges the legitimate right to protest and debate issues such as immigration, but strongly condemns the racially-motivated attacks.
“The thuggery we have seen so far, motivated by racism and hatred, is despicable and should be called out for what it is,” he writes.
Highlighting the strength that comes from the diverse workforce of the United Synagogue, Goldstein wrote: “I am extremely proud of the diversity of the workforce at the United Synagogue...I know that many of our colleagues will be feeling worried and vulnerable and I want you to know that I stand with you at this difficult time.”
He encouraged employees to reach out to him directly if there was anything else the organisation could do to support them.
The letter, sent yesterday, coincided with the news that far-right riots would be taking place across the country last night.
Over 1,300 police officers were deployed across London in various areas, including North Finchley, Harrow, Croydon, and Walthamstow.
In North Finchley, workers were observed boarding up shops, and restaurants had their shutters down as police patrolled the area.
Police have warned of the possibility of more far-right violence tonight.
