Leaders of Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue have picked the rabbi and rebbetzin of Manchester’s Yeshurun Synagogue as the new rabbinical couple to look after their Yavneh satellite minyan.
Rabbi Greg and Rebbetzin Hannah Bank will be spending Shabbat at the United Synagogue’s largest congregation the weekend after next — after which BES members will be asked to ratify the choice.
Rabbi Bank studied in Israel, served as a combat medic in the IDF and has had educational roles in South Africa.
Manchester-born Rebbetzin Bank has taught in both Israel and South Africa.
BES chairman Josh Moont said the couple, who have three children, had “consistently impressed us with their warmth, sincerity, and commitment to fostering an engaged and inspired community. We are confident they will be outstanding leaders and role models as we continue to build a stronger BES together.”
BES Senior Rabbi Alex Chapper was “thrilled to be able to welcome Rabbi Greg and Rebbetzin Hannah Bank to the BES rabbinic team. Their passion for Jewish life, commitment to building community, and ability to connect with people of all ages will undoubtedly enrich our kehillah.”
Yavneh had previously mooted becoming a separate US synagogue but has decided to stay as part of BES.
The Banks would take up post at the end of the year. Interim rabbinic couple, Rabbi Avinoam and Rebbetzin Haddas Czitron have agreed to stay on until they arrive.
