Scores of children have used their summer haircut as an opportunity to donate their hair to help young people with cancer in the UK and Israel.

Thirty-eight girls and one boy gave away their hair to create wigs for cancer patients under 25, who have lost their hair due to treatment.

The wigs will provide comfort and confidence to the young people both in Israel and the UK, said Zichron Menachem, a leading Israeli cancer support charity, which hosted the biannual event.

Families whose elder children had previously donated their hair brought younger siblings to do the same, and a new "Braids of Hope" board allowed donors to attach their hair post-cut, symbolising their commitment.

Mirielle Shiers, who had been growing her hair for over a year, had several inches cut off at the event, having already fundraised for the charity by selling items at a local fete at Chanukah.

Mirielle said: “I wanted to do something for charity, and I wondered if I could donate my hair from my upcoming haircut. When I found out about Zichron Menachem and how they support children with cancer, I knew immediately that this was the perfect way to make a difference."

Zichron Menachem volunteer Miriam Begal said, "I volunteer at every Zichron Menachem haircutting event to be part of the incredible atmosphere. Seeing such selflessness gives me a boost for weeks. It is remarkable to see young children excited to give their hair. Zichron Menachem has created happy givers and happy receivers."

Participants came from all over the UK, including London and Manchester, for the day of activities, which featured  a bouncy castle, glitter tattoos, nail art and makeup sessions.

Zichron Menachem, which supports people under 25 of all faiths and backgrounds, collaborates with Israel’s top medical professionals.

Funds raised will support Zichron Menachem's various services, including medical information, second opinions through the charity’s “Clinic of Hope” and respite breaks from medical appointments for parents and children.

Eli Seliger, CEO chairman of Zichron Menachem UK, said afterwards: "We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support. The generosity of the children donating their hair and the donations received have blown us away. It is truly inspiring to see the compassion and dedication of everyone involved."
