The Jewish Museum has postponed a series of activities scheduled to take place this month at a local library, citing “security “concerns from rising tensions in the Middle East and the stabbing of children at a dance class in Southport earlier in the week.

Creating Connections, a “free, family focused exhibition” was due to run at Swiss Cottage Library in north-west London throughout August.

Posting on social media today, a statement from the museum said: “In light of recent events we have made the difficult decision to postpone Creating Connections at Swiss Cottage Library. The security and wellbeing of Library and Museum visitors and staff are of the utmost importance. We apologise to anything planning to come and enjoy the activity. We look forward to welcoming you at one of our other summer activities.”

The museum is currently running events online and in other communal spaces following the closure of its Camden site a year ago.

A spokesperson for the Jewish Museum told the JC: “We work closely with CST, who have recommended all Jewish organisations follow strict security procedures due to very high tensions between Israel, Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah.

“This, together with the tragic events in Southport, made us want to increase security to protect our visitors. Unfortunately, the specific room the event was going to be held in wasn’t adaptable.

“We are looking to find a more secure location so that the programme can run this summer.”

On Wednesday, CST released a statement on X/Twitter, saying: “This notice from CST is a strong reminder that security procedures must continue, especially given the extremely high tensions between Iran and Israel. The latest developments mean it is essential that security procedures are fully implemented.”

Swiss Cottage Library has been approached for comment.
