A Jewish Care employee, who has devoted over a decade of his career to the charity, has been named as the Care Employee of the Year at a prestigious national awards ceremony.
Horace Boston, who is senior housing manager of Jewish Care’s retirement living apartments, scooped the accolade at the Caring UK Awards.
Praised by the charity’s heads for his person-centred and innovative approach, Boston has piloted a digital healthcare scheme for tenants at Selig Court in Golders Green, where he was the registered manager. He also works with his team to make advanced care plans for residents.
Jewish Care’s CEO, Daniel Carmel-Brown, said: “[Horace] builds strong, positive relationships with tenants and their families, who often tell us how much they appreciate his kindness and the way he supports people to maintain their independence and identity.
“He ensures tenants feel supported, follow their passions, and discover new ones. Horace’s leadership and commitment to tenants and to his staff team is a testament to his exceptional approach to care, ensuring that each tenant can live independently while being part of an active, vibrant Jewish community.”
At Selig Court, the tenants range in age from 66 to 101, a number of whom are Holocaust survivors and refugees, who fled Nazi persecution.
They include Rachel Levy BEM, who said of Horace: “[He] is calm and immensely caring, and I admire the way that he deals with people, especially tenants and their families. I feel enormously privileged to know Horace. He should be very proud of the vital role he plays in the lives and the wellbeing of many older people. He is most worthy of this award, and I am delighted for him.”
Responding to news of the national award, Boston, 60, said: “There are many people at Jewish Care that I’d like to thank for the support and recognition of me as a manager and for our retirement living service, and for empowering us to create the best environment possible for our tenants to live independently, with support.”
He added that the award “would not be possible without the truly amazing people I work with, who make my job fun and rewarding. I feel honoured and blessed to be part of the amazing group of individuals in our team.”
He paid tribute to the individual managers, saying: “I know that our managers will go on to win awards too because they recognise that each person is unique, and they are motivated by our values of integrity and care, providing personalised, compassionate support to each individual.”
Boston’s contributions to the wider social care community include serving as chair of the Barnet Skills for Care group for extra housing schemes.
