The show is going on for Mancunian former cabaret performer Sonny Warner, who turns 95 at the weekend.
Having already raised £8,500 for the local Christie Hospital and the Tomas Leighton charity for disabled children, he hopes to bring in considerably more from “A Tribute Night with the Stars” in May.
Despite hearing impairment, the nonagenarian has been working the phones to raise money.
Mr Warner performed at hospitals, nursing homes and clubs for 50 years with his late wife Pamela. At its height, the show had a cast of more than 20 and it raised considerable sums. Mr Warner’s charitable endeavours were recognised with the award of an MBE in 1994.
“My wife passed away six years ago but I still love raising money,” he told the JC. “People are wonderful. Because of the show I became well-known locally and when I rang up people to ask for a donation it was very easy.
“I get so much pleasure when I open the mailbox and see the amazing response from all the wonderful people who have donated.”
The May show will be his fund-raising swansong. “I will be attending... if I’m still here.”
