The head of the Jewish community’s only LGBT+ education and training charity has been recognised for the work he has done championing equality, diversity and inclusion.
Ariel Chapman, executive director of KeshetUK, is one of 50 people whose names have been put on the prestigious 2024 Diversity Power List.
Now in its third year, the list includes well-known names, such as London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Paralympian and TV presenter Hannah Cockcroft OBE, alongside unsung community heroes.
Ariel, who took up the role at Keshet in September, said: “This recognition is incredibly meaningful. I am so proud to be leading KeshetUK in their invaluable work creating kind, inclusive spaces where young people and adults can flourish as their authentic selves.
“Our work is both challenging and joyful and this recognition is not just for me but for the tireless commitment of our staff, trustees and volunteers over the past decade.”
Prior to working at KeshetUK, Ariel had spent a decade addressing antisemitism, Jewish inclusion and LGBT+ phobia in higher education and across global organisations. He had held positions in equality, inclusion and diversity at Citizens Advice, the University of Plymouth and Inclusive Employers, which helps companies embed workplace inclusion.
Ariel has also written a number of publications, addressing equality and diversity, including one on queer Jewish pride.
Last year, he became a recipient of one a Liberal Judaism Emerging Leadership bursary and was nominated for an ITV National Diversity award for being an LGBT+ role model.
Paul Sesay, CEO and founder of Inclusive Companies, which set up the Diversity Power List said: “Our annual Diversity Power List highlights the work of extraordinary individuals - many of whom fly under the radar - championing diversity, driving inclusion and striving to achieve equity in society.”
“If charity begins at home, then diversity begins in communities among our colleagues, neighbours, friends and peers. Not everyone feels able to start a movement, but we all have the capacity to support someone else.”
A spokesperson for KeshetUK said: “KeshetUK has a vision of a world where no one is forced to choose between their LGBT+ and Jewish identity. This award is a testament not only to Ariel’s hard work in creating more inclusive, welcoming spaces for over a decade but also to KeshetUK’s continued groundbreaking work within the UK Jewish community.”
