Brighton and Hove Reform Synagogue has been granted Grade II listed status by Historic England.

The decision, published on the Historic England website on April 2, is expected to protect the modernist synagogue and its striking stained-glass windows from destruction by property developers.

Built in 1967, it is only the second postwar synagogue in England to be listed by Historic England. The first one was Western Marble Arch Synagogue, which was built in the early 60s. In contrast, 150 postwar churches are on the national register of places deemed worthy of preservation for their “special or historical” significance.

Historic England highlighted the synagogue’s stained glass as “an early and unusual example of a Holocaust memorial in Britain”. It also gave “the dedication of the synagogue building itself to the memory of Jewish victims of the Holocaust” as a reason for its historical interest.
