Sculptor Frances Segelman returned to her native Leeds to fashion a bust of Holocaust survivor Arek Hersh.
The sculpting session took place in front of an audience of 200 at the local community centre and the subject was delighted with the result. “I think Ms Segelman is an amazing artist and the bust a remarkable likeness,” he said.
Polish-born Mr Hersh, 88, recalled that, on arrival at Auschwitz, photos of his parents and other relatives were taken away from him.
“That was the last time I ever saw what my family looked like. In spite of everything, I still believe in God.
“The Nazis tried to destroy not only all our people but our religion.
“They didn’t succeed, did they? We are still here.”
