Wimbledon Synagogue will be looking for new spiritual leadership to replace the rabbinic duo who have held the reins for 11 years.
The South London Reform congregation was one of the first synagogues to introduce a job-sharing arrangement, engaging Rabbis Sybil Sheridan and Sylvia Rothschild.
The two rabbis attended on different days during the week and alternated over Shabbat.
But Rabbi Sheridan has now retired, and Rabbi Rothschild will be leaving in August.
“I didn’t want to be a full-time rabbi and Wimbledon wanted someone full-time,” Rabbi Rothschild said.
Rabbi Sheridan, who currently chairs the Assembly of Reform Rabbis UK, will be devoting more time to a charity she has set up to support Jews in Ethiopia.
Rabbi Rothschild said she was sad to come to the end of the job-share.
“It takes a lot of thoughtfulness and communication between the job-sharing partners,” she said. “But it was brilliant working together with another rabbi, especially as one as talented as Sybil.”
