A 90 year-old Kindertransport refugee is set to skydive to raise money for Jewish Care.

Eli Abt, a retired architect from Finchley, advertised his plan to make the 13,000 ft jump on a JustGiving crowdfunding page.

Mr Abt wrote on the page he was also doing the jump to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary to his wife Muriel, 80 years since he boarded the Kindertransport, 50 years since he opened his architecture firm and 90 years since he was born in Berlin.

Mr Abt hopes to raise £6,895; he has already raised over £1,000.

He was just nine when he witnessed the Kristallnacht pogrom and escaped from Berlin on the Kindertransport. Mr Abt’s father was able to escape, and together they were reunited with his mother and brother in Brighton in September 1939, narrowly missing the outbreak of war in Europe.

Speaking to Jewish News, Mr Abt said: “At a time of great political and economic instability in this country, we don’t know what pressures there will be on the Jewish community so this is the right time to give.”
