Oxford Chabad hosted a Shabbat dinner in honour of the city's first Jewish Lord Mayor for almost 900 years.

Councillor Elise Benjamin was joined by other civic dignitaries and around 80 students and university staff members at the Slager Chabad Jewish Centre.

Cllr Benjamin spoke of her pride at the Jewish community's connections to the city, which stretch back to medieval times.

Her own relationship with the city's Chabad team began a decade ago when she was instrumental in helping the organisation establish the tradition of displaying a 12ft menorah in the city centre every Chanucah.

Fellow councillor David Williams said the dinner was a night for celebration and said Cllr Benjamin's selection for the role represented "a historic moment for the Jewish community in Oxford and one that they take great pride in.

"It is a symbol that the Jewish community is respected and on a par with all other religions and faith communities in our tolerant and multicultural city".

The dinner was partly sponsored by the Oxfordshire Ales brewery.
