Chief Rabbi Mirvis's Shabbat UK event, set to take place in four weeks, has received endorsement from celebrities.
Actress Maureen Lipman, radio presenter Vanessa Feltz and singer-songwriter Alex Clare have recorded promotional videos, encouraging participation in Shabbat activities.
More than 100 synagogues, school and other groups are planning events to enhance celebration and observance of the day of rest on October 24 and 25.
Ms Lipman, speaking from the dressing room of the Theatre Royal Brighton, said she kept Shabbat "in the best way I can, given I have got a show to do."
Holding up a candlestick, she said "I do it on my own in my dressing room." But if she were in London she would celebrate it with her grand-daughter in the afternoon.
"We all need a bit of meditation in our lives," she counselled. "Get your mates round and have a go."
Ms Feltz said, "It will be absolutely fantastic to celebrate Shabbos just for once in my life the way it was intended to be celebrated - in the bosom of my family, focusing on… a little bit of holiness, a little bit of recreation and some downtime, some peace and quiet with my family."
Mr Clare recalled how he had become Shabbat observant around the time he had brought out his first album.
His record label had at first been ready to accommodate his religious needs, as he turned down opportunities to play on Shabbat and festivals. But finally they had lost patience when he refused a live performance for the BBC on Succot and dropped him.
"At the time I was gutted," he confessed.
Some time later he received a call from Microsoft who wanted to use his song Too Close for an internet campaign. It has sold nearly six million copies, while his album sold around a million.
"I really feel as a result of that decision to keep Shabbos, I have had huge amounts of blessings for that decision," he said.
The videos are due to be posted on the Shabbat Uk website, www.shabbatuk.org, which also has details of the event.
