If you build it…

Students at Nottingham University enjoyed a Purim party of thrills and spills thanks to their handy chaplain who built them their own indoor rollercoaster.

At the Willie Wonka-themed celebration, students enjoyed a boat-shaped ride manned by “oompa loompas” that took them on a tour of a cardboard cut-out chocolate factory.

Nottingham chaplain Rabbi Zvi Bloom built it in three days. He said: “I have a background in carpentry and construction. The students absolutely loved it.”

Classics student Joshua Neifeld said: “It was really fun — one of the most special parties.”
Over 70 students also attended Purim festivities at Nottingham Hebrew Congregation.

Quiz whizzes

Cambridge University triumphed for the second year running in the UJS Jewniversity Challenge quiz.

Home team Cambridge beat finalists Bristol, Nottingham, St Andrews and London Egal with a score of 365. Bristol came in second with 250 points, followed by Nottingham with 170.

Students battled it out over questions on world religions, technology and geography. Specialist rounds chosen by the teams included TV show The Simpsons and the films of Quentin Tarantino.

Sixteen teams had taken part in four regional heats in Scotland, Birmingham, Bristol and London.
