Rabbi in the mix

Student radio show JewkBoxOx had a special guest star last week while co-presenter Louis Trup (or DJ LTJ) busied himself with finals. Taking the mic alongside regular broadcaster Ben Goldstein was Oxford chaplain Rabbi Michael Rosenfeld-Schueler (pictured right), who, before he hosted Shabbat dinners, was a teenage DJ host in his home-town of Missouri.

“Guest hosting was the first time I’ve been on the air since the ’90s,” the rabbi revealed. “There was a buzz in the studio and among the listeners – and we even had an audience in the United States.”
Over their hour-long spot, the DJs discussed the “Jewishness” of secular bands, such as Vampire Weekend, and finished with a thought for the day, delivered by the rabbi on the essence of Judaism. Wonder if DJ Mirvis will be next.

LEAD THE WAY

More than 40 students from the Three Faith Forum’s ParliaMentors programme gathered on Monday for graduation. Participants were selected at the start of the year as “aspiring leaders from different backgrounds” to set up projects in their various communities. “The fact that we’re all from different faiths gave us the chance to move away from what we’re used to,” Nottingham student Lindsay Weisberg said. “That automatically gives you a more positive view of others.”
