The Blackpool Synagogue building has been sold for in excess of £100,000, exceeding estimates.
Overlooked by Blackpool Tower, the 1916 Grade II-listed synagogue had been expected to fetch between £50,000 and £75,000 at auction last Thursday.
However, the auction was called off when an unidentified buyer submitted a higher prior offer. The dwindling community, numbering around 75, has joined forces with the congregation in neighbouring St Anne's.
It is unclear what the Blackpool building will be used for, although a developer is eligible for grant funding from English Heritage.The synagogue is on a "heritage risk" register and experts view it as a last example of Jewish Edwardian Oriental architecture.
Shul president Barry Goodstone said proceeds from the sale would relieve financial concern over the upkeep of Blackpool's Jewish burial facilities. "It could have been a liability if we couldn't sell."
A deconsecration service will be held on May 13.
