A Holocaust survivor has sparked anger for publicly forgiving a 93-year-old former SS officer accused of helping murder 300,000 at Auschwitz.
Eva Mozes Kor embraced Oskar Gröning during his trial last week after giving evidence about the medical experiments that were conducted on her and her sister at Auschwitz.
She repeated her message of forgiveness on German TV on Sunday night, saying that the case against the "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz" should not have come to court.
Mrs Kor's 49 co-plaintiffs, all either survivors of Auschwitz or relatives of victims, reacted with anger.
The group released a statement saying: "It should not happen that a co-plaintiff appearing on behalf of the murdered victims… uses the role as a media opportunity for personal forgiveness… we cannot forgive Mr Gröning."
Mrs Kor said: "I am sorry that they don't want to forgive Oskar Gröning. It shows the sad situation that victims think and feel it is better to suffer and remain victims than an idea that could heal victims and move ahead with hope and peace."
