A celebrated communal figure has been given a huge musical send-off ahead of her retirement after this Shabbat.

Viv Bellos was director of music at North Western Reform - also known as Alyth - in north-west London for 35 years, as well as taking charge of the shul's drama programme.

More than 400 guests attended the reception, which saw 100 of the choir singers who Mrs Bellos has led over the years honour her with songs.

The choirs, made up of performers aged five to 85, came together for a specially commissioned work by composer Meir Finkelstein, entitled Ezrat Avoteinu.

Mrs Bellos said that it had been "a joy" to be a vital part of the Alyth community for so long.

The shul's minister Mark Goldsmith said that "as rabbis we could not have wished for a better partner in the task of building community".
