Here’s a thought to keep you staring at the ceiling through the night. The BBC recently launched I’d Do Anything, the broadcaster’s latest reality-casting TV show featuring “the Lord” — as programme host Graham Norton likes to call Andrew Lloyd Webber. This time, the show in question is Lionel Bart’s Oliver! and contestants are competing for the right to play the title role and that of Nancy. Notebook understands that early BBC production meetings considered auditioning for other roles in the musical — presumably the Artful Dodger and Fagin were the main contenders. Both were rejected. So here’s the thought to keep you awake at night: that there was even the vaguest possibility of prime-time TV featuring countless botched attempts at Fagin and the inevitable queues of contestants wearing big noses and shrugging, mugging and kvetching in their best cod-Jewish accents before singing: Got to pick a Pocket or Two. Sweet dreams.
