Leading Israeli Jon Medved entrepreneur set for London

articlemain

He is one of Israel's leading venture capitalists. Now entrepreneur Jon Medved plans to bring his business to Britain.

Mr Medved's crowd-funding company OurCrowd has pumped more than £170 million into nearly 100 companies while promoting Israel.

The Jerusalem-based investment platform has helped to fund the creation of everything from robotic legs to fingerprint-operated guns and cannabis inhalers. By 2018, the chief executive hopes to raise the firm's annual investment to £750m.

He is now putting together plans to open a London office, a move which he hopes will increase OurCrowd's reach.

Mr Medved said he hoped to spread the message that "building trade and investment ties is the only answer to the absolute insanity of this BDS stuff".

The primary aim of his business is to relentlessly promote Israel, he said. "Rather than constantly explain and say to the boycott movement, 'you're not playing fair', let's put out a positive agenda about investment in Israel.

"You're stupid if you don't realise how great Israel is in critical areas."

The country's high-tech sector attracted £2.1 billion of investment in the first half of 2016, and Mr Medved estimated that there were "more than 300 companies with research and development centres in Israel, including Honda and General Electric.

"Just look at cyber-security - 1,500 companies worldwide, of which nearly 500 are in Israel. We help these amazing Israeli companies get out there and get investment."

He argued against calling OurCrowd a crowd-funding business, saying: "It's a misnomer. It's about involving hundreds of young people with us and our companies and spreading the Israeli story."

He has so far hired dozens of interns, and aims to boost this figure in London.

"Let's show them Israel is not just a never-ending conflict, but a place with remarkable creativity, cuisine and cool businesses, and get young people spending their summers interning in Israel."

OurCrowd already has bases in New York, California, Singapore, and Australia.
