On Wednesday Leonard Cohen released a sneak preview of his upcoming album: a song called “You Want It Darker”.
In it, the singer addresses God, asking why bad things happen. The chorus includes words that are both Hebrew and biblical: “Hineni, hineni, I’m ready my Lord.” Cohen also includes words from the Kaddish: “Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name.”
If that wasn't Jewish enough, his backing singers aren't his usual band or female harmonisers, but the all-male choir of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, the synagogue in Montreal in which he was raised, and the cantor sings the final chorus as the track fades to a close.
