Bad day at the office - an apology

Mistakes happen to all of us, but when I trip up, it’s very public.

Even worse — my mistake made someone else look bad.

This week’s JC contains a recipe for a delicious date honey cake. Aha, I thought, that would be good for vegans, as honey is a no-go. I wrote a snappy headline — ‘vegan friendly date honey cake’ — which filled the space better than the simple (and accurate) ‘date honey cake’ label Denise had provided.

What I didn’t consider were the three eggs in that recipe; making it a ‘not at all vegan friendly date honey cake’.  In fact, unfriendly to vegans.

I’ve apologised to Denise Phillips, the recipe creator, a long-standing contributor to my food pages, and someone who knows when a recipe is vegan or not. I’m also certain no one will actually feed this cake to a vegan, but it’s not my proudest moment.

The corrected recipe is here. Please go and make it. I’m sure it will be delicious. And if any vegans want to try making an egg-free version then I’d love to hear all about it.

Shabbat Shalom – enjoy your Rosh Hashanah preparations.
