US rapper invokes the Holocaust on stage

American rapper Macklemore invoked the Holocaust in reference to the Israel-Gaza war, while performing in Germany.

The rapper said the only way for Germans to atone for the atrocities of the Holocaust is to “free Palestine.”

Speaking to the audience at the SparkassenPark stadium in Mönchengladbach, Germany, Macklemore said: “The atrocity that was the Holocaust, there will never be reparations for that.

“The only way that we can atone for our past is by today standing up against apartheid, against occupation, for free Palestine. That’s the only way.”

The Seattle-based rapper, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, added: “I want the same thing for everybody. I want everyone to feel safe, to feel loved, to feel like they can wake up and have a shot at the day, to have breath in their lungs and to not be scared.”

The artist, who in 2014 was slammed for performing on stage in a costumed labelled antisemitic, went on to perform his newest single Hind’s Hall at the show on Saturday.

The track is an anti-Israel anthem in which he expressed support for Palestine and the protests taking place at university campuses across the US.

In his latest single, he also argues that terror attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7 were an act of “resistance.”

Macklemore, who is on a world tour, told an audience in Paris last week, that “the Palestinian fight and resistance has been continuously what has given me energy, what has uplifted my spirit, what has reminded me that we must keep going in this fight for liberation for all human beings.”

In 2014, There was widespread outrage when photographs of what he wore at his concert were posted online.

The rapper denied accusations of antisemitism after he appeared to don a “fake Jew” outfit for the gig in Seattle.

He issued an apology on his website, insisting that he did not intend to insult Jewish people when he wore a black suit, wig, beard and large plastic nose.

At the time Seth Rogen attacked Macklemore, tweeting: “If someone wanted to put together an antisemitic Jew costume, they’d have that exact shopping list”.
